Vibrantly coloured Madhubani paintings were originated in Mithila. This beautiful form of art is passed from one generation of females to another. Its origin is marked to the time of King Janaka’s daughter Sita’s marriage with Lord Rama. It is believed that Lord Janaka ordered his kingdom to make paintings on the occasion of his daughter’s marriage, marking its evolution to the time of Ramayana. The main themes of these colourful paintings are images of Hindu deities like Krishna, Rama, Lakshmi, Durga and Saraswati and natural themes like the Sun, the Moon and religious plants. This amazing art was confined to village of Bihar only, mainly painted on walls of houses in order to decorate them, but today this art is used in different ways and is loved by all. These attractive paintings are symbolized as there is no space left in the main theme, the canvas is covered with motifs, flowers or symbolic geometrical patterns.

Madhubani has been making transitions from the times of Ramayana to walls of Mithila houses and now it is touching modern lives.
